This knowledge shifted the focus of medicine from purely treatment towards prevention and the management of risk. It gave rise to public health campaigns urging people to exercise, eat healthier, and quit smoking, acknowledging that the physician’s role extended beyond the hospital walls and into the daily habits of the population.
Simultaneously, the post-war era saw breathtaking advances in medical technology and treatment. The development of effective vaccines for polio, measles, and other viral diseases by pioneers like Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin prevented suffering on a global scale. The discovery of the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1953 opened the door to a molecular-level understanding of life, heredity, and disease. This would eventually lead to the mapping of the entire human genome at the turn of the 21st century, holding out the promise of personalized medicine, where treatments could be tailored to an individual’s unique genetic makeup. Organ transplantation, once the stuff of science fiction, became a clinical reality, from the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins in 1954 to the 女性護理 heart transplant by Christiaan Barnard in 1967.
These procedures, while saving and extending lives, also created profound new ethical dilemmas about the definition of death, the allocation of scarce organs, and the nature of personal identity.
